Weekend Recap: NYC WingFest, Bloody Roots And Head Of The Charles

It was another weekend jam packed with events. Gansett was all over New England and beyond for some good times and good hours. Ralph's Diner in Worcester was host to the 14 hours New England Bloody Roots festival. Over a dozen bands rocked the stage both inside and outside on Saturday. You can't have a bloody roots festival in New England without Narragansett beer. TallBoy was in Cambridge for the Head Of The Charles regatta. Lots of spectators were stopping to get their photo taken with him. Good times all around. Narragansett was also the official beer of NYC WingFest. Yum! Check more on that below.

NYC WingFest recap from the Streaker Sports blog: This past weekend saw the third annual New York City Wingfest go down alongside the Hudson River and under a perfect fall sky. While the event is certainly about celebrating delicious wings, it also serves some good as a portion of every ticket sale went to the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund. Over 1,000 wing devotees converged on the Boat Basin Café to eat unlimited wings from the city’s top restaurants and drink unlimited beers provided by Narragansett.

In the spirit of America, Wingfest has no panel of judges, no "expert" wing eaters who decide the favorite for the rest of us. We leave that up to the people as every attendee gets to place a vote for their favorite wing in New York City.

The contestant field this year was a mix of some old favorites and upstart newcomers with last year’s winner, Duke’s leading the pack. 2010 Runner up R.U.B. and 2009 winner Dinosaur Bar-B-Que were back again, hoping to knock Duke’s off their pedestal.

Fan favorites from year’s past were back at it as well this year, with the perennial fan favorite for "buffalo style," Blondie’s, along with East End Bar and Grill and Wogie’s Bar and Grill. New to the competition this year were Wildwood BBQ, Hill Country, and Tribeca Tap House.

While everyone’s wings were somebody’s favorite, there can be only one "best wing in New York City" and when all of the votes were counted it was once again Duke’s on top, besting Hill Country Barbecue by a mere 7 votes for the crown of 2011 Wingfest Champion. Not exactly sure what they do to make such delicious wings, but rumor has it the wings are actually "manicured" before being cooked. No idea what that means, but it works; these things are amazing.

Between the weather, the beer, the wings and the location, you really couldn’t have asked for a better fall day. Definitely be sure to join us next year and enjoy the pics below! Photography by Michelle Etwaroo.
