HISTORY AND HOLIDAY: Art in the Age Examines The Origins of Winter Traditions
Exhibition Dates: December 3rd - January 31st
Opening First Friday: December 3rd, 6pm-8pm
tra·di·tion
1 : an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior (as a religious practice or a social custom) b : a belief or story or a body of beliefs or stories relating to the past that are commonly accepted as historical though not verifiable
2 : the handing down of information, beliefs, and customs by word of mouth or by example from one generation to another without written instruction
The melting pot of ethnic backgrounds in the United States has resulted in a rich tapestry of Old and New World holiday customs, with many of our most well known and unique winter traditions traceable to Pennsylvania German immigrants. During the months of December and January, AITA will shed light on the origin of some of our most beloved winter traditions, focusing on the Pennsylvania German influence that carries through to many of our current holiday celebrations.
Friends of Art in the Age, including The Reverend Michael Alan, Beth Beverly, and Shane Candy will join us to help demonstrate some of these classic traditions, such as: ginger snap cookies, candy making, Moravian stars and ornaments, Santa Claus (Beltznickel), and the Christmas tree.
