This Weekend: Battle Of Badges, 85 Main Shuck Off, Rhode Races And Vanson's Open House

It's time once again for the New York Fire Department's Boxing Team to come back up to Boston to face a new crop of fighters from the Massachusetts law enforcement ranks (police, fire, and corrections) in the BATTLE OF THE BADGES III. This year the event will be held at THE PARK PLAZA CASTLE, a spectacular function hall at 130 Columbus Avenue, on Saturday, April 30th.

The net proceeds of this awesome amateur boxing event will benefit The Edwin Rodriguez Foundation and other local charities. The exciting lineup of fights highlights everyday heroes going toe to toe in sporting combat. The doors will open at 5PM with the first bout scheduled to start at 7PM. General Admission tickets for the event will be sold at a price of $35 with reserved seating in rows 4-8 priced at $60. VIP/Ringside tickets will be available at $100 each and also include a pre-fight VIP reception featuring complimentary appetizers, beer, and wine. Call 781-534-9511 or email brian@battleofthebadges.info to order tickets today.

In addition to the competitors at this special event, some of the Boston area's best professional boxers and other local sports stars will also be in attendance. This is truly a can't miss event for boxing fans, especially after the success of the 2010 Battle of the Badges II event.

What started out as a lofty idea in April of 2009 turned into one of the most talked about, best attended, and highly anticipated local restaurant events of the year, contributing to Putnam’s recent ranking as one of the top 15 towns in New England (as voted by Boston Magazine, 2010). Chef/Owner James Martin of 85 Main in Putnam, CT promises not to disappoint with this year’s 3rd annual 85 Main Shuck-Off, an oyster shucking competition and shellfish celebration that is expected to rally thousands of people into downtown Putnam. The event will take place from 12:00-6:00 pm on Sunday, May 1st at Rotary Park on Kennedy Drive in Putnam, CT with a rain date of Saturday May 7th.

The event kicks off at 12:00 pm and tickets can be purchased to buy Shrimp, Mussels, Clams, Fritters, Steamers, Oysters, Margaritas, Draft Beer, Wine, and Sangria (IDs are needed for alcohol). Music from the band Truffle and local favorites Big Jump and the Doors of Deception will be part of the festivities.

A limited amount of seating and picnic tables will be provided, so guests are encouraged to bring their own portable chairs. The Shuck-Off is considered a family occasion where adults as well as children can enjoy the day’s events.

The fourth annual Cox Providence Rhode Races, including the Cox Sports Marathon, Half-Marathon, Kids Marathon, and 5k, will be held on Saturday April 30 and Sunday, May 1, 2011 in Providence, Rhode Island. The Kids Marathon and 5K will be held at Roger Williams Park and the Full and Half start/finish will remain in Downcity! Stop by beer garden inside the Downtown Providence Skating Center on Sunday, May 1 for a Gansett. There will be awards and other post-race festivities there from 9am to 2pm!
