'Gansett Bar Of The Week: Avery

The Avery

18 Luongo Square
Providence, RI

In the heart of Providence just on the West Side sits a neighborhood that is all to familiar with Narragansett beer. Right in the middle of Luongo Square is a fairly new spot called The Avery. This up and coming side of the city is home to several artists, students and professionals alike. Night after night these residents pile into the bar for a few 'Gansetts and some great conversation. Step into the Avery and once your eyes adjust from the dim lighting your ears come alive with the sound of the ambient music coming from the stereo system. The propietor John Richard, or best known as J.R. to his friends, acquired this spot shortly after the closing of a local favorite, Decatur Lounge. Although he completely renovated the interior, he set out to keep much of the old vibe the same. "It's still a place where you can come and relax with friends while enjoying a 16oz can of Narragansett for just $2," said J.R. With help from his partner Mike Sears, the Art Deco design comes from local artists Kyla Coburn and Andy Trench. Behind the bars sits two lighted beauties with a backdrop of familiar buildings from the Providence skyline. But you really have to get out and see this for yourself. They are open Monday through Friday 4 pm to midnight and Saturday and Sunday 5 pm to midnight. And yes they accept credit cards. Find them on Facebook. This is one of our favorite places to drink our part.
